Saddam Hussein captured on the 13th of December, 2003 in ad-Dawr, Iraq. This was the result of Operation Red Dawn lead by the American military. Hussein had been on the run since April and had avoided capture on multiple occasions. James B. Hickey, a commander in the US army made it his personal mission to track down Hussein. Over the course of months, Hickey’s brigade worked closely with the TF 20 group to find information on his whereabouts. This led to his capture and subsequent execution but did not end the war.
