After France had a number of defeats in the War of the Second Coalition, Napoleon took a stride in his position to move up the ranks. Without direct orders, he travels back to Paris. Even after the failure in Egypt, Napoleon created an alliance with director Emmanuel Joseph Sieyes and overthrew the Directory from a coup d'etat on November 9th, 1799. France made Napoleon first consul, which is an appointed government to protect and promote the citizen's interests and demands. He got a popular vote with 3,000,000 in favour with only less than 2,000 opposing. Joseph's plan was to give Napoleon a minor role however with Napoleon's ambitions for a higher role, the Constitution established a dictatorship. Worried by the people that might create a revolution for a democracy again, Napoleon resorted to the regular way of elections, he drafted the Constitution of the Year VIII and making his own election. The constitution would approve if he got at least 99% approval in a rigged plebiscite. Surprisingly,
in January 1800 Napoleon got 99.94% approval officially listed as 3,011,007 people who voted yes. After the War of the Third and Fourth Coalition, minor alliances were made with allied nations for small periods in time. After, a long period of silence and peace emerged. Many assassination plots were given for the Royalist and the Jacobin Republic. Napoleon wisely used these assassination plots to show the creation of an imperial system and rebellion. Also that the plots were against him since he was not born in France. Quickly another unanimous election was made. Napoleon was named Emperor of France on the 18th of May, 1804. After crowning himself from his exceptional abilities of leadership during a time of a silent crisis in France.
