1 Jan 1861 Jahr - Clarina Nichols
Beschreibung:
Clarina Nichols - The Chindowan town newspaper founded by Eben Blachly was a Free Soil advocate for the settlers. The term “Chindowan” stands for “leader” in the Native language. Clarina Nichols was a prominent abolitionist in Quindaro who campaigned to allow women to vote in school board elections in Kansas in 1861 when it became a Free State. She was a friend of Susan B. Anthony. She was co-editor of the Chindowan. Clarina also allowed her home to be a station on the Underground Railroad and is therefore deemed a conductor and station master since she hid escapees in empty cisterns.
