The Republic of Salo was established in the German occupied territories in northern Italy, after the king and his prime minister in Adulio acted to sign the armistice agreement with the Allies. The state, which was in fact a German-sponsored puppet government, in which Mussolini was the head of state, but the German was in actual control between September 25, 1943 and April 25, 1945.
