1 Jan 1648 Jahr - First fire ordinance adopted in Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam

Fire wardens were appointed to monitor people's adherence to the fire ordinance and insubordination was met with a fine, which was consequently used to pay for the rudimentary equipment which the, then, volunteer department used to fight fires.
