For the diagnosis of inoperable or metastatic melanoma, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) permits the use of ipilimumab, a monoclonal antibody. Ipilimumab stimulates the immune system by removing a "brake" that normally controls the intensity of immune responses to attack cancer cells.
