26 Apr 1954 Jahr - Geneva Peace convention
Beschreibung:
In 1954, several states met to discuss peace, this included conversation on Indo-China, it was split into 3 countries, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Vietnam was split on the 17th parallel.
The North was communist and the South was anticommunist. On 1956, free elections were meant to be held but they weren't because America feared "domino" theory and that the communists would win. The Americans supported the southern leader, Diem who ran a corrupt anticommunist regime and had very little respect for the Vietnamese and their religion (he was christian).
Soon after this, the south began fighting against the Vietcong, a communist party in S.Vietnam who were supported by the North. They used GUERILLA warfare. They had taken over 40% of the South by 1963.
