18 Dez 1938 Jahr - Women
Beschreibung:
The Nazis believed in traditional roles for women as wives and mothers.
In 1933 the birth rate had fallen so women were encouraged to have lots of children so that Germany could become a great power. Loans were offered to new brides who agreed to not get a job and women were encouraged to stop smoking and do more sport to increase fertility. By 1936 there were 30% more births than in 1933. But this wasn't enough for the Nazis.
However, as Germany began to rearm, they needed women to take up work but the women didn't want this so didn't sign up. A compulsory "duty year" was introduced but this was unpopular.
Then in 1938, women were encouraged to have children again as the population needed to increase. Divorce laws changed so that a couple could get a divorce if one of the people was infertile. The "Lebensborn" programme was introduced when some unmarried young women were chosen to have children with a racially pure SS officer. In 1938, the "cross of honour" tarted being rewarded to mothers who had had a certain number of children, this was meant to encourage them.
Nazi policy for women was thoroughly confused as they were always asking different things of the women and never seemed satisfied with the results.
