9 Aug 1848 Jahr - Establishment of the Free-Soil Party

The Free-Soil Party was organized by the anti-slavery northern democrats who were resentful at Polk's actions. The party was against slavery in the new territories and advocated federal aid for internal improvements and urged free government homesteads for settlers. It increased sectionalism by dividing and furthering the political beliefs of the North and South.
