Missouri was admitted into the U.S as a slave state, but made Maine was made to be admitted as a free state. It also prohibited all slavery in Louisiana Purchase territory north Missouri. This was important because it put the issue of slavery in the forefront which increased the idea of sectionalism by dividing Americans.
