After Sherman lost control over Atlanta he headed for Tennessee and Alabama. He was hesitant to set off a wild goose chase across the South, so he made two groups of his men, 60,000 went with General George Thomas and Sherman took the 62,000 left and headed towards Savannah and right through Georgia.
