By the time the Potsdam conference happened, the US president Roosevelt had died and a new, strongly anti-communist President replaced him called Truman.
Churchill lost the election and was replaced by Attlee.
There had been no free elections in the liberated Eastern Europe. Instead Stalin had installed "sympathetic" governments which helped him to gain power there.
Stalin also knew that the US had successfully tested an ATOMIC BOMB.

There were many disagreements at Potsdam.
-Stalin wanted to cripple Germany so they would not start another war but Truman did not want a second Treaty of Versailles.
-Truman was also worried about Russian intentions to unite Eastern Europe under communism so adopted a "get tough" attitude.
