A major offensive by the Russian army on the eastern front. It's goals consisted of crippling the Austro Hungarian army as well as forcing the Germans to send reinforcements to the east relieving pressure on the west. The offensive was a success, attaining both goals but at severe loss of live on both sides. With the Russians losing between 500,000-1,000,000 troops and the Austro Hungarians losing around 1,000,000
