24 Dez 1865 Jahr - Ku Klux Klan

Beschreibung:

Key Event: The creation of the Ku Klux Klan is a key event because it demonstrates the spite the Southerners still feel towards the North. Moreover, it limits reconstruction because Klan’s members made it difficult to create equality amongst many races.

Defined: An American secret society that advocates white supremacy. The group was made after the Civil War in spite of the emancipation of slaves. Klan activities involved burning crosses, staging rallies, denouncing immigrants, and killing African Americans or their anti-slavery supporters.

Described: After the Civil War, the south was forced to rejoin the Union. However, they were still unsupportive of the Republican Party’s abolitionist mindsets. Specifically, they were enraged that the party had wanted to provide economic equality for African Americans. As a result, they decided to rebel against the government by limiting African American economic and social endeavors.

Short Term: The Ku Klux Klan had assisted in passing Black Codes, which restricted African American freedom, and forced them to work in lower paying jobs. As a result, they had reduced the success of the Freedmen’s Bureau.

Long Term: The government was finding difficulty is preventing Klan activities from happening, so they created three Enforcement Acts, including the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871: federal offenses include conspiracies to deprive citizens of the right to hold office, serve on juries and enjoy the equal protection of law. Ulysses S. Grant finds motivation in these acts to further crush Klan activity.
