"'I'm sorry to have to tell you, Jack, but you have TB.'... He came to their house every day and sat shivering in a chair while Jessie and her mother applied poultices to his thin chest and back" (32).

John gets diagnosed with tuberculosis in the summer of 1917.
He has no wife to care for him, so he turns to Jessie for help.
Jessie nurses John throughout the winter, and the two grow very close.
They form a relationship, despite the fact that John has a family waiting for him back in Scotland.
This is the point where Polly discovers the truth of what John has been up to. It's crushing news, but Polly is forgiving, and eventually learns to trust John again. That is, until he kills her.
