19 Mai 1956 Jahr - DuPont Cellophane Case: Relevant Market

Beschreibung:

The antitrust case in which the US Supreme Court ruled that while DuPont had a monopoly in the narrowly defined market for cellophane, it did not monopolize the more broadly defined market for flexible packaging materials and so it did not violate the Sherman Act.

Relevant Market is when courts decide if market power exists by considering the share of the market held by the dominant firm. So, when analyzing this case DuPont did have a monopoly in the market for cellophane, however DuPont only controlled 20% of the market for flexible wrapping materials. Therefore the Court decided DuPont was not a monopoly, which shows how the court interpreted the relevant market.
