On June 1813, American's were defeated at the Beaver Dam. American troops were trying to capture a supply depot there. At the beaver dam, Laura Secord slipped through enemy lines and warned the Britsh of the American attack. The British decided it was best to attack from behind. Shortly after Americans Surrendered. They set all the homes and buildings on fire to burn. British troops, crossed over the Niagara River for revenge, eventually capturing Fort Niagara, also burned towns along the river.
