As we read through the first chapter of the book, the reader quickly learns that Siddhartha is on a mission to find himself and achieve enlightenment. In order to do this, Siddhartha feels it is best for him, after meditating with Govinda, to follow the Samanas in order to achieve enlightenment. Eventually, after his father's disapproval and a silent protest by Siddhartha, he then agrees to let him and Govinda go to join the Samanas.

Character Relationships: Siddhartha and Govinda both share that close relationship with each other by meditating with each other when deciding whether to attempt to achieve enlightenment. They both adopt the lifestyles of the Samanas together and both share that bond where they both try to figure out their future together.

Themes, Symbols, and Motifs: Siddhartha's father's reluctance to let him venture to the Samanas could symbolize what is to come with Siddhartha and how he will go about life and how indecisive he could be. This is an interesting point to bring up, as the reader is not yet far enought into the book to get a clear picture what Siddhartha is like.
