Established by Miguel Diaz in the southwestern part of the island after the destruction of a small early settlement near modern-day Añasco during a Taíno uprising. Named after Germaine of Foix, the new queen of King Fernando. The settlement was originally built in modern day Guayanilla but, in 1573 after several attacks by French corsairs in 1528, 1538, and 1554, it was merged into a sinlge city near its present day location.
