Both the alien acts and the sedition act drastically increased the discriection with which the president operated. Specifically, the alien acts gave the executive much greater leeway to arrest and deport non-citizens or non-residents without significant cause. The sedition act was notable beacuse it forbade maligning the name or the character of the government
