1 Jan 1892 Jahr - 1892 - The opening of Ellis Island heralded a new era of mass migration to the United States. No longer was immigration dominated by the older groups of Scandinavians and Wesern Europeans. Now, a great proportion of immigrants, especially those coming through Ellis Island on the East coast, were of South or East European origin, and many were Jews, whose religion was not permitted in several parts of Europe.
