Beschreibung:
The Acropolis is a citadel built on top of a rocky promontory overlooking the city of Athens with a view towards the Aegean Sea. (The ancient Athenians used the Acropolis as a religious site, building several temples, since the 6th century BC.) During the Golden Age of Athens under Pericles, three main buildings were built on the site, the Parthenon, the Propylaea, and the Erechtheion, which together, form a powerful irregular composition. These three buildings are commonly considered the high point in the development of the Doric and Ionic orders. The Parthenon temple was begun in 447 BC and was structurally complete by 438 BC. The Propylaea served as the gateway to the Acropolis and was constructed in 437-432 BC. The Erechtheion (421-406 BC) was a temple complex built on two levels with four varying porticoes and five entrances using the Ionic order. This is the earliest appearance of this order on the Greek mainland.
The individual buildings on the Acropolis and their composition, the way they act as foils to one another, and their harmonious siting not only reflect the Greeks' exacting design standards, but also their appreciation of beauty and their ideal sense of wholeness in art and life.
