1 Jan 1886 Jahr - 1886 - The Haymarket Square Riot initially began as a demonstration for an eight-hour workday, but after the police killed several people, a bomb was thrown and several police officers were killed. This riot resulted in the arrest and conviction of eight people, of whom four were eventually given capital punishment. This riot was endemic of and continued a pattern of anti-union sentiment in the Gilded Age.
