1 Jan 1200 Jahr - Great Mosque of Djenne

Beschreibung:

The greatest achievement of Sudano-Sahelian architecture. It is the largest mud-built structure in the world. Djenne was founded between 800 and 1250 CE where it flourished as a great center of commerce, learning, and Islam. It later became very important as a political center when the French arrived. It is the site of a cultural festival called the Crepissage de la Grand Mosquee or the plastering of the great mosque. The Mosque today is the third reconstruction with the original having been made in 1200 CE when King Koi Konboro(First sultan) began building it. The mosque needs to be replastered every year so it doesn’t crumble. The second mosque was built in 1834-1836 and it replaced the old damaged one. On the top of the pillars are ostrich eggs which symbolize fertility and purity in the Malian religion. It was made in Djenne, Mali.
