Shortly after Gates and Ballmer's approval in July 20/21, Rick Thompson and Robbie Bach on as top executives and project escapes from Nat Brown's division. Brown says “mouse guys” weren't going to ensure lessons of xbox were passed on to core Windows team. Brown decides to leave project.

Brown wanted simplified version of Windows to serve as backbone of internet appliance, Berkes also wanted that.
