When people found out about Minnesota's woodlands and fertile prairie lands, the population went from 6,000 to over 150,000 due to the convenient access to the state by railroads and canals.

In 1848, Minnesota wanted to become a territory because the government would help business leaders get more land from the Native Americans.

In January of 1858, the territory applied for statehood and both Congress and Buchanan delayed the application because there was a big dispute on whether Kansas should become a state. Minnesota wanted to become a state so it could control its own money, it could attract railroad companies to build there, and it would give them a voice in the country's big decisions (slavery).

It became the 32nd state on May 11, 1858 and was a free state. Because Kansas was not admitted at the same time, the anti-slavery supporters had an advantage in congress for a while.
