The SDS, or Students for Democratic Society, was formed to protest American Capitalism. They issued the Port Huron Statement, which called for colleges to be more democratic in their decision-making. The group was inspired by the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s & early 60s. The group later switched their focus to free speech.
