Following the capitulation of the Japanese in 1945, the Civil War resumed with the Kuomintang deprived of a large portion of their power, as they had taken the brunt of the damage from the Japanese, and had been at the forefront of most of the heavy fighting between the Chinese and their invaders.
Under Mao Zedong’s leadership, the Chinese Communists were able to drive out all forms of opposition to their new regime. Before total victory over the Nationalists could be orchestrated, the remnants of the Kuomintang and Chiang Kai-Shek fled to Taiwan.
During the formation of the People’s Republic of China, over 1 million citizens were killed. A majority of the Western powers refused to recognize the newly-created Communist Chinese state.
