The Panama Canal, an architectural project originally started by France and then resumed by the United States, was (and still is) a passageway that goes right through the heart of the Americas. It made transporting goods by sea much easier because cargo ships and boats could avoid the dangerous waters of Cape Horn, near the southernmost point of South America.
