The Russo-Japanese war happened between 1904 and 1905 and was a skirmish regarding power over both Korea and Manchuria. It started when Japanese forced overran Russian installments before they were able to bring in support. Japan won international recognition of its authority over Korea and was further esteemed after Russia ceded the southern half of Sakhalin island.
