The Qing dynasty came to an end. A nationalist party called the Kuomintang, led by Sun Tixian, believed the only way to protect China from foreign imperialism was to modernize China. The Qing dynasty promised a new constitution, but the people wanted to break away from "old China."The Kuomintang forced the last Qing emperor to step down from his pole. The main goal was to end foreign influence, change to a democratic government, and economic improvements. Sun Tixian became the leader, but had trouble unfiying CHina because of the powerful warlords. He fled to Japan, while Yuan Shikai took his place.
