Germany set up a blockade of Britain using submarines. They sunk any ship heading for Britain regardless if it was a battleship, cargo ship, or passenger ship. On May 7 1915 Germany sunk The Lusitania heading for Britain which had over 100 Americans aboard. This led to the U.S. joining WWI.
