Beschreibung:

Description: This act was passed by Congress in order to gain more men for the fight against the South during the Civil War. This would be the first of a series of acts that called for male citizens ranging from ages 20-45 to register to fight in the war for 3 years along with aliens with the intentions of becoming citizens by the 1st of April unless you were wealthy. Upperclassmen often bought exemption or payed someone to go in their place.    Immediate Impact: Due to the wealthy being able to buy their exemption many citizens began protesting with “bloody draft riots” that happened in New York City and the Union still faced a shortage of troops.
Long-term impact: This would lead to the draft being used during World War 1, again in 1940 to help the nation prepare for World War 2 , and during the Korean War. The last U.S. Military draft would occur during the Vietnam War.
Key people: The key leader of the Confiscation Act was Abraham Lincoln and Congress
Role of each person: Abraham Lincoln was the President who at the time signed the bill to enable this act to happen.
