Description: Because the men of the homes were off fighting in the Civil War, the women had to step up and take part in dominantly male roles. In the South the Women began to take over the family farms. In the North more women began to work in the mills and factories. Some women were even spies and soldiers in the Civil War. Most of the women who were on the battlefields were nurses. The nurses would not only care for the wounded soldiers but would also cook and do their laundry.
Immediate impact: Women began doing dominantly male jobs
Long term impact: Over time, more women would begin to go to work and do different jobs besides nursing and teaching. Women would become lawyers, judges, congressional members, etc.
Key people: Clara Barton
Role of each person: She founded the Red Cross a month before the Civil War broke out. Barton would set an example of women taking leadership roles and would also attract women into the health field.
