Having been the Soviet sector of a divided Korea (after world war two Japanese occupation), North of the 38th parallel, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea was founded - led by a communist government under Chairman Kim Il Sung
They asked for help overthrowing the South but none was given and again in March 1949 but Stalin didn't want to fight the 7500 American troops stationed in the South but encouraged Mao's China to do so.
