The wall separated east and west Berlin, East was communist, so people tried leaving the east before the wall was put up. It was put up to keep people from leaving and getting the transformation ideas from the U.S. along with their aid. Reagan proposed for Mr. Gorbachev to take down the wall in june of 1987
