In hopes of avoiding the war, appeasement was the name given to the new British policy which allowed German territory expansion unchecked. This idea was widely supported as they and the French couldn't handle another war so soon and some even sympathized for Germany. They truly believed Hitler would stop after they relegated Sudetenland to Germany. As the old saying goes "Some things never change". This was definitely true in Germany's case as they still fought for more land and power to support their revenge and take over all of Europe. Even though he promised to make no more territorial demands he broke the Munich agreement and continued to invade Czechoslovakia and then Poland. Appeasement was then seen as a sign of great weakness.
