Inspired by the assassination of Ernst vom Rath, a Nazi diplomat, by a Polish Jew, Kristallnacht marked the first government-endorsed wave of violence against the Jewish population in Germany. It marked the turning point in Hitler’s ideological war; after the Night of Broken Glass, no Jews were “getting by”. They could no longer own businesses, and were forced to pay fines for damage done to public property.
