The Province of Carolina was divided into two separate colonies. The division began in 1669, when the Fundamental Constitutions of Carolina were passed. This divided Carolina into two provinces, Albemarle in the north and Clarendon in the south. The divide continued in 1691, when separate governors were appointed to each province. In 1712, the division became official; Carolina was split into North and South Carolina. However, the two colonies continued to be ruled under the Lords Proprieters until 1719, when a rebellion prompted Great Britain to appoint a royal governor instead.
