Launches 3-Stage Taepodong-1 rocket into space. Flight path took the rocket over Japan. DPRK claimed this was a satellite launch but this was considered by foreign powers to be a disguised ballistic missile test. Taepodong-1 had an estimated range of 1,500-2,000 kilometers.
