1 Jan 1444 Jahr - Beginning Of The Portuguese Slave Trade
Beschreibung:
The beginning of the Portuguese slave trade is important, due to the fact that the Portuguese were the first of the Europeans to utilize the labor of African slaves. The slaves were used in Europe as miners and servants, on the African coast on sugar plantations, and in Brazil on the engenhos. The engenhos were very specialized sugar production plants that required massive amounts of labor. This labor could not come from the native people of Brazil, due to both revolts and the fact that the native population was decimated by European disease, forcing the Portuguese to turn to Africa for slaves.
