1 Jan 1896 Jahr - Election of 1896
Beschreibung:
- one of the most emotional elections in U.S. history
- the whole gold/silver coinage debate was a key issue
- both the Democrats and the Populists nominate Bryan; the more conservative "Gold Bug" democrats either voted Republican or formed the separate National Democratic Party
- the Republicans nominated McKinley, who supported high protective tariffs and was considered a friend of labor; they also blamed the Democrats for thePanic of 1893 and upheld the gold standard
- Bryan campaigned across the country
- Mark Hanna did most of the work campaigning for McKinley; raised money and sold McKinley through the mass media while McKinley stayed home and conducted a safe, front-porch campaign
- In the last weeks of the campaign, Bryan was hurt by (1) a rise in wheat prices, which made farmers less desperate, and (2) employers telling their workers that factories would shut down if Bryan was elected
- McKinley won
