On this day, the joint parliaments of the United Kingdom and New Zealand declared New Zealand to be an independent British Commonwealth. Like all British Commonwealths, New Zealand is completely autonomous, remaining in "free association" with the UK through ceremonial deference to the British Monarch. New Zealand has seen no challenges to its sovereignty, and is one of the freest and most prosperous nations on Earth.
