(Date approximate) (Long before there was Genghis Khan, there was Modu Chanyu. Modu unified the tribes of Mongolia into a confederation, largely as a protective measure against China. The Xiongnu remained united until civil war broke them apart in 60 BC. Several confederations would follow throughout Mongolian history, with Genghis Khan's being the greatest.)
