On this day Liechtenstein was effectively made independent when the first German Confederation (a successor state to the Holy Roman Empire) dissolved, leaving the Prince of Liechtenstein the only authority over the territory. Despite its small size (only 160 square km or 62 square mi), Liechtenstein has seen no threats to its sovereignty since, which may in part be due to its close ties with the neutral state of Switzerland.
