On this day the People's Republic of China was established, ending the Chinese Civil War which had broken out at the end of World War II. The PRC was established by the Chinese Communist Party, who were strongly influenced by the Soviet Union. The old republican government had violently attempted to silence communists in China, which backfired spectacularly and led to the uprising & civil war. The PRC gained control of mainland China while the republican government fled to Taiwan. China has had a rocky history ever since. While China is one of the most powerful nations on Earth, and the average quality of life is decent, its legacy is darkened by many issues. Human rights abuses, poor political freedom, and the persecution of minorities are some of the most notable issues China faces today.
