In 1972, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area was created by Congress, and Alcatraz Island became part of the National Park Service unit as a tourist attraction. However, it was not open to the public until February 2nd, 1973. Today, about one million people come to visit Alcatraz on tour boats every year (Oliver 118).
