Joe Camel (by R.J. Reynolds) is one of the best know cases of Tobacco companies attempting to appeal to children. Their animated character promoted the 'cool' or "smooth" image that could be attained with Camels. To specifically target the male youth population, Joe became a purposeful display of hyper-masculinity. After immense opposition from the public, the campaign was pulled in 1997.
