Lincoln was shot in the back of the head by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theater in Washington D.C. Booth was a supporter of the Confederacy who disagreed with Lincoln’s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. His assassination effectively halted Lincoln’s plan for Reconstruction, and he was succeeded by Andrew Johnson.
