The American Enlightenment was a time that prompted people to think beyond their traditional ideals and promoted individuality of thought. This was a time when people were trying to balance reason with religion and questioned their beliefs. Through the enlightenment colonists began to question how being controlled by the Crown would affect their natural rights. This time of questions merged into a “great awakening” when colonists started question their religion.
